Abu Dhabi: Two phases of the Mafraq-Ghuwaifat Highway project have been completed and will be ready for operation this month, the Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) said in a statement on Saturday.

“Two 64km phases of the total six-phase road project stretching from Al Ghuwaifat border post to Barakah city have been completed. All project works will be put in operation as per the plan and within the contractual deadline,” said Saleh Al Shaiba Al Mazroui, Musanada’s acting Roads and Infrastructure executive director.

Al Mazroui said the project included widening of road, construction of lay-by areas for drivers, and an upgraded lighting and electricity system.

“The road has been widened from two to three lanes in each direction from Barakah city and from two to four lanes from after Al Silaa to the Al Ghuwaifat border post, enhancing the road capacity particularly at the border post and facilitating the increase in trade volumes, land transport and local industry.

“The project included the construction of a temporary parking facility near the border post, lay-bys for road users, a three-metre internal shoulder and a three-metre external shoulder for emergencies. This is also in addition to three critical interchanges to facilitate free movement,” he added.

The Dh5.3-billion Mafraq-Ghuwaifat highway is one of the strategic projects, forming part of Abu Dhabi Plan aiming to provide an effective transport system serving the community and economy of the emirate and enhancing traffic safety on this critical road, he said. It is also part of the plan to create an integrated land transport network and services, leading to the realisation of the emirate’s vision, and establishing a sustainable infrastructure in line with highest international standards.
