Sharjah: There are quite a few number of places in Sharjah that have become notorious for traffic – but it seems that the Al Khan area may soon be removed from that list.

The General Headquarters of Sharjah Police on Tuesday announced new evening timings for trucks travelling to and from Port Khalid in a bid to ease traffic during peak hours.

According to the changes, all trucks and heavy vehicles are now banned from 5.30 to 11pm, in order to alleviate the burden of motorists as they commute back home.

However, the truck ban for mornings will remain the same. As previously reported by Gulf News, trucks and heavy vehicles are banned from travelling within the city of Sharjah from 5.30 to 9.30am.

The neighbourhood of Port Khalid has regularly been a popular destination for drivers who go back home via Al Khan Bridge from Dubai, and according to residents, the heavy presence of trucks has constantly posed as a problem.

Other heavily congested areas, as previously reported by Gulf News, also include Al Majaz and Al Taawun, where truck drivers use the routes to go to the industrial areas as well as to the port.

In a statement, the Traffic and Patrol Department at Sharjah Police called upon truckers to abide by the instructions. The department also called for the cooperation of motorists to adhere to traffic rules and to avoid causing traffic jams in the area.

A police official at the Traffic Department explained that they are constantly deploying police patrols to monitor the flow of traffic, "and if we see trucks that are passing through the city when they are not supposed to, they will be issued a fine on the spot", he said.
