Sharjah: Owners of vehicles and motorists who have accumulated fines will be able to pay 50 per cent of their traffic tickets if they opt to settle their dues before the end of April 2012.

The slash in traffic fines was approved by the Sharjah Executive Council meeting on Tuesday.

Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Sharjah Crown Prince, Deputy Ruler and Chairman of the Sharjah Executive council chaired the meeting which approved the suggestion made by the Sharjah Police Department.

Major General Humaid Mohammad Al Hudaidi, Sharjah Police Commander has welcomed the executive council's positive response which aims at lifting the burden of traffic violation fees registered in Sharjah.

He added that the initiative will maintain the public's safety by not violating traffic laws and regulations.

He added that the initiative will be applied on January 1, 2012. The reduction in traffic fines will be valid for four months, after which the nominal value of the fine has to be paid.

The gesture is applied for fines committed only before December 28, 2011. Any traffic violation after the set date will not be discounted.
