Dubai: A 24-year-old Emirati man was killed and his 34-year-old compatriot suffered serious injuries when their car hit a parking meter and several shops on Friday morning in Al Qusais.
The accident happened around 3:30am at Aleppo Street Junction, Chief Traffic Prosecutor Salah Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution, said.
“According to primary onsite interrogations, the 34-year-old driver drove his car recklessly and was speeding when he suddenly and inattentively swerved to a service road and hit the parking meter,” he said.
“His car continued skidding and rammed into a number of stores causing severe damages to the storefronts. No second car was involved in the accident. Traffic Public Prosecution has handed over the body of the deceased to his family for burial. Meanwhile, the 34-year-old driver has been placed under provisional detention until he recovers from his injuries for further investigation,” said Bu Farousha.
In a separate accident, a truck overturned on the Emirates Road on Friday evening killing a passenger in the vehicle.
According to Traffic Prosecution records, Bu Farousha said, seven people have died in traffic accidents since the beginning of January.
“The casualties include three Emiratis, two men and a woman. Reckless driving, speeding and sudden swerving were the main causes of the accidents. One accident happened because the driver failed to pay attention to other road users. We call on all motorists and road users to abide by traffic laws and be cautious to avoid liability, loss of lives and destruction of properties,” said Bu Farousha.
