Abu Dhabi: An Arab man died and seven Asians were wounded in a road accident that occurred this (October 11) morning, the Abu Dhabi Police announced in a statement today (October 11).

The accident took place in heavy fog when a trailer collided with a bus used to transport workers on Al Sila Road, said Colonel Ahmad Zouaydi, deputy director of capital police at the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate.

Investigations are currently under way to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.

Major collisions have occurred in the past during foggy weather in the UAE, with pile-ups on the highways between Abu Dhabi and Dubai and Al Ain.

Col Zouaydi urged motorists to practise caution on the road, especially when travelling on highways. He called on drivers of heavy vehicles to put off travel until the fog clears in the morning. The official also stressed that drivers should reduce speed during periods of low visibility, and keep themselves up to date with weather bulletins.

Other recommendations made include maintaining enough distance between vehicles, and avoiding switching lanes or overtaking during foggy conditions.

In 2008, more than 60 cars were involved in a massive pile-up on the Abu Dhabi–Dubai highway, killing five and leaving more than 350 others injured. In 2011, a 127-vehicle pile-up occurred on the same highway, leading to the death of one person. And in 2014, more than 57 vehicles were involved in a collision near Al Ain’s Abu Samra area.
