Abu Dhabi: New LED lamps have replaced the old traffic signals on Abu Dhabi island to reduce the number of traffic signal offences, the Department of Transport (DoT) said today (Sunday).

The newly installed traffic system is one of the latest traffic light systems worldwide and provides a clear view of traffic light colours in addition to its role in saving energy. Moreover, the life span of these signals is at least five years, which significantly reduces periodic maintenance costs.

“The implementation of the LED system in traffic signals is in line with DoT’s objectives in achieving sustainable development through saving energy and managing the costs of traffic lights’ maintenance while ensuring the safety of road users by providing clear traffic signals,” said Faisal Ahmad Al Suwaidi, Director-General of main roads at the DoT.

Hamad Adel Al Afeefi, Acting Director of Traffic Management and Technology (TMT), added: “The Traffic Management Centre at the DoT has replaced all old traffic lights in Abu Dhabi Island with a system of LED traffic lights which provide a clearer vision of traffic signals from long distances. The new system contributes to the prevention of traffic light offences. It also saves energy and reduces the cost of traffic signals’ maintenance considerably.”
