Dubai: All payment channels in Dubai were expected to be recalibrated to offer 50 per cent discount in traffic fines by Monday night or by Tuesday morning, a top official said.

The clarification came after some motorists said the discount payment option was not available on Monday morning.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Traffic Department at Dubai Police, said more time was needed to update the payment system and it would be activated later on Monday night or by Tuesday morning.

“We are working to recalibrate all payment channels so that motorists can avail the discount. We needed more time to update the payment system as it is linked with several banks, kiosks and Dubai Police smart app and website. By Monday night or maximum Tuesday morning, customers will benefit from the discount,” Brigadier Al Mazroui told Gulf News.

The discount was announced by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, as part of the UAE’s 46th National Day celebrations.

All traffic fines registered between January 1, 2017 to December 2, 2017 are eligible for the discount. The discount is valid for 90 days.

Last month, Dubai Police had also announced a 50 per cent discount on fines registered in 2016, if they are paid before the end of 2017.

However, Brigadier Al Mazroui, hoping the generous gesture by Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed, will solve the problem of accumulated fines.

“We hope motorists will take advantage of this gesture to pay their traffic fines and settle their outstanding dues. Just put the vehicle plate number or the driving licence and the amount of fines will appear after discount. The 50 per cent include impoundment and traffic points,” Brigadier Al Mazroui said.

He urged drivers to follow traffic instructions, stressing that the traffic offences after December 2 is not part of the discount.

“Any traffic offence after December 2 won’t be part of the discount. Traffic rule violation is the main reason behind accidents. Less traffic offences mean less accidents.”
