Abu Dhabi: Children under 10, old people above 55 and people of determination can enjoy free rides on public buses inside Abu Dhabi city, according to a new regulation that came to force on Tuesday.

These categories can get a 50 per cent discount on fares on intercity buses operated by the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (DoT) as per an Executive regulation issued by Shaikh Diab Bin Mohammad Bin Zayed, Chairman of the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi.

This discount will be applicable on buses operating to other emirates as well.

The regulation stipulates that children under 12 are not allowed to travel in public buses unaccompanied.

Those who misuse these facilities will be liable to pay a Dh500 fine.

Big pieces of luggage that may cause inconvenience to other passengers and damage public properties are not allowed in buses. Pets and bikes are also prohibited. However, visually impaired people can be accompanied by trained dogs as their guides. Violations of these rules will attract fines ranging from Dh200 to Dh2,000.

Those who commit serious offences such as sexual harassment will be dealt with strictly and such cases will be referred to the courts by law enforcement agencies.
