Dubai: Families can now use the pink taxis driven by women drivers, the public transport agency announced on Thursday.

The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) aims to provide safe and smooth transportation for ladies, children and all family members, said Ammar Bin Tamim, Director of Dubai Taxi.

He said the move had been carried out in response to public requests and in accordance with the RTA's plan to provide the best services to meet the needs of the cross-sections of society.

The ladies' taxi service kicked off earlier this year with 50 taxis which have distinctive rose-coloured tops. The cars are driven by 100 qualified female drives.

This taxi service can be requested by reservation on 04 2080808, week-long from 6am until 2am. The taxi service has been in high demand since its introduction.

One driver earlier told Gulf News that she had undertaken six trips on the first morning the service was launched.

"I dropped off many passengers to various malls in Dubai," she said.

The taxis are visible in front of hospitals and malls and other places which are usually frequented by women.

To date four of the drivers are Emirati women.

This is good news for families. Also, I hope they can deploy these taxis early on the roads so that ladies won?t be forced to ride with some rude taxi drivers.
