Electric vehicles get a push

Dubai: Electric vehicles could soon be part of the fleets at various government departments in Dubai as the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) is promoting their use in an attempt to improve Dubai’s green image.

Greater use of electric vehicles was among one of the several ideas discussed during the 35th meeting of the Council, which was attended by Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of DSCE, and Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of DSCE, along with other top officials.

“The Supreme Council of Energy, in collaboration with Dewa [Dubai Electricity and Water Authority], is coordinating with a number of government organisations that have large fleets of vehicles, to buy hybrid or electric vehicles in the coming years, in line with the strategy to reduce carbon emissions in Dubai by about 16 per cent by 2021,” Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer said.

The Council was briefed on the latest energy demand management approaches led by the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 and the management and distribution of gas in Dubai in line with Dubai’s Integrated Gas Strategy 2030.
