Dubai: Dubai's first two double-decker roads on Doha Street in front of the Dubai Mall will be fully opened by the end of this month, Gulf News has learnt.

The Dh605 million project will ease traffic congestion on Doha Street and ensure smooth traffic to new developments including the Burj Dubai, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and the Dubai Mall.

The road will also provide an important link between Shaikh Zayed Road, Jumeirah and the Al Khail Road and Business Bay Bridge.

It is a flyover being built over Doha Street and consists of three lanes towards Jumeirah and five lanes in the direction of the Business Bay Crossing and Al Khail Road. It costs Dh605 million.

"While we have already opened one double-decker road from the first Interchange towards the Business Bay, the second double deck road will be opened by the end of April," said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The double-decker roads are about two kilometre long flyover on the Doha Street and is built to accommodate larger number of vehicles to cope with the increased traffic on this road due to massive developments.

"Once opened, motorists coming from the Business Bay Road and Al Khail Road can drive through the double-decker road from Business Bay side and from there on to Shaikh Zayed Road and also continue towards Al Safa, Al Wasl and Jumeirah," said Al Tayer.

He also directed to accelerate the opening of the underpass linking the traffic flow from Dubai World Trade Centre with Burj Dubai area, as well as the underpass linking Zabeel with Burj Dubai and Dubai Holding projects.

The Financial Centre Road Project (Doha Street Project) entails construction of a flyover across Doha Road, consisting of three lanes in the direction of Jumeirah and five lanes in the opposite direction.

The capacity of the new roads will be more than 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. To supplement roads network in the area, two underpasses have been added to ensure seamless traffic flow on the eastern and western parallel roads at the intersection with Doha Street.

"These projects come in the context of RTA strategy to keep pace with the urbanisation drive and meet the needs of the current and projected demographic growth and expansion of advanced roads and transport network.

"This will match the transitional phase witnessed by Dubai; which is shaping into a premier cosmopolitan city, an international hub for tourists, visitors and businessmen from all around the world," he added.

RTA should consider a similar double- decker road on the Dubai -Sharjah highway.

I live in the Burj Downtown area. There is a significant issue in crossing over from the Burj Downtown side to Shaikh Zayed Road heading towards Abu Dhabi/Jebel Ali. Currently, we are forced to climb the first interchange, go down the other side, and end up in traffic behind the Porchse showroom before connecting with the main Shaikh Zayed Road. This needs to be resolved quickly if residents are to have peace of mind commuting to work in the morning.

This is a very good idea by the RTA which is part of their plan to ease the traffic. It is going to be the fastest link between Shaikh Zayed Road

I think the RTA should think of building a double-decker road over the Shaikh Zayed Road? It has more of a need of this Double Decker Road than any other place. I believe the main concern should be to allow vehicles to move easily on the main roads which link Dubai with other emirates and other important places.
