Dubai: According to UAE authorities, motorists who do not know how to stop properly at a traffic light can lead to only one thing – a recipe for disaster.
Sharjah Police has launched a campaign to aware drivers on traffic rules, in addition to warning pedestrians on the dangers of crossing the road inappropriately.
A Sharjah Police spokesperson said that the year-long campaign will also educate residents on the necessary guidelines they should follow, as well as the top tips that motorists should adhere to.
One of the main dangers on UAE roads, according to police, are speeding motorists who attempt to miss the amber light before it changes red.

As part of the country’s efforts to cut the number of accidents at traffic light signals, the Ministry of Interior launched an educational video clip to raise awareness on how motorists should behave.

In 2016, more than seven per cent of all accidents causing major injuries or death are due to red light jumping, which happens at more than 70,000 times a year (22,000 in Abu Dhabi, 25,000 in Dubai and 23,000 in Sharjah), according to roadsafetyuae.com.
The new UAE federal traffic law, which was launched in July 2017, means that motorists of light vehicles will be slapped with a Dh1,000 fine and 12 black points for jumping the red signal, while the vehicle will be impounded for 30 days. For truck drivers, the fine is Dh3,000 and the driver’s licence will be suspended for one year.
