Abu Dhabi: A remote traffic control system, which uses a web of digital cameras connected to the police control room has been activated by the Abu Dhabi Police Department.
It will monitor traffic on the capital's roads and deter reckless driving.
Colonel Hussain Ahmad Al Harithi, Director of the Abu Dhabi Traffic Department, said the system uses digital cameras fixed at intersections and different roads in Abu Dhabi.
He said traffic will be monitored remotely using these electronic devices. Expired licences and car registrations will also be a part of the remote control monitoring system, apart from all the other traffic violations.
The new system will be operated in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi centre for controlling traffic signals and the central operation room at the Abu Dhabi police department.
The aim is to make use of all the intelligent systems while making and achieving the best criteria and standards of traffic safety, to limit violations that result in traffic accidents.
He also added that during the first quarter of 2010 the number of deaths due to traffic accidents dropped by 20 per cent as a result of continuous efforts in this field.
Colonel Al Harithi said handing out traffic violation tickets does not please Abu Dhabi police at all, neither is it their aim to do so, however, realistic numbers and data show that traffic control methods deter reckless drivers and urge them to abide by the rules.
