Dubai: Roads in Al Barsha will be further expanded by 16km, in addition to 60km of internal roads that will be ready by August, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced.

The project, being carried out at a cost of Dh100 million, will see infrastructure at Al Barsha South developed in two phases.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, has awarded a contract for construction of phase two, which will begin in August following the completion of phase one.

Part of the five-year plan endorsed by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the project will see paving of internal roads in a number of residential communities in Dubai at a total cost of about Dh1 billion.

Development work will include building roads as well as stormwater drainage, improvement of electricity and water networks, street lights using LED light technology, and the construction of public parking areas for schools and mosques.

“Over the past few years, the RTA has completed the construction of internal roads in 13 residential communities costing about Dh552 million. Work is currently under way in constructing internal roads in five residential areas costing about Dh319 million,” Mattar Al Tayer said.

In November, RTA will release a tender for constructing internal roads in Al Khawaneej 2 and Nad Al Sheba 4.

In 2016, internal road projects will begin in five residential districts of Al Aweer 1, and Jebel Ali Industrial Area as well as Al Ghusais Industrial Areas 3, 4 and 5.
