Ajman: Ajman Police have slashed the speed limit on Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Road, a vital internal artery in the emirate, to bolster safety through slower moving traffic, said a top police official.

Ajman traffic authorities have decided to cut the speed limit effective May 1 for all motorists to 90km/h from 100km/h following a series of deadly single- and multiple-vehicle accidents that police said involved high rates of speed and driver error.

Speed radar and cameras are programmed to the new speed.

Colonel Ali Hamid Al Museibi, director of licensing at Ajman Police, said the speed limit is being strictly enforced.

He said that most of the fatal accidents have been clearly caused due to speeding.

The road recorded 2,149 accidents in 2014, ranging in severity.

“We have decided to cut the speed limits on some of the vital roads in the emirate where many fatal accidents have taken place,” he said.

The Ajman Traffic Department launched an awareness campaign to make drivers aware of the changes.

Brochures in different languages were distributed to motorists on the roads.

Ajman Municipality has changed all the speed signboards on these roads, he said.

Col Al Musaibi appealed to all motorists to observe the new speed limit in order to maintain traffic safety.

He also called for the need to pay attention and leave enough space between vehicles,
