Abu Dhabi: Traffic supervision on the Abu Dhabi–Al Ghuwaifat Road has been intensified after the Traffic and Patrols Directorate provided patrols in the Western Region with mobile radars called Al Qannas (the sniper).

Major Suhail Sayah Al Mazroui, Head of the Highways Section in the Western Region, emphasised that a comprehensive plan is being implemented to promote efforts to reduce accidents on the roads, especially on highways, given that they will witness high traffic density during the upcoming summer holiday period.

The updated traffic supervision plan covers all traffic hotspots associated with a high number of accidents.

Major Al Mazroui said that violations caught by Al Qannas radars in the first quarter of 2016 added up to 415 speeding tickets. He added that the police will show no leniency when enforcing the traffic law on reckless motorists who endanger their lives and those of others.

Meanwhile, Captain Abdul Rahman Al Ali, Public Relations Branch Manager at the Highways Section in the Western Region, called upon motorists to adhere to speed limits and to wear their seat belts. He also highlighted the risks of overloading vehicles and using expired tyres.

Captain Al Ali urged drivers not to use their mobile phones while driving and to stop their vehicles on the right side of the road if they felt tired or drowsy, and to take a break.

Captain Al Ali noted that the Abu Dhabi–Al Ghuwaifat Road had been divided into three sections and the speed limits revised accordingly. The first stretch spans 176 km from the Al Dhafra Bridge diversion to the Baynunah forest, with a speed limit of 100 km/h and radars set at 121 km/h. The second stretch between Baynunah forest and the Barakah region has a speed limit of 120 km/h with radars set at 141 km/h. The third section extending 64 km from Barakah to Al Ghuwaifat has a speed limit of 100 km/h with the radar set to 121 km/h.
