Sharjah: The Sharjah Police recorded 8,781 seat belt violations by motorists during the first nine months of this year, according to Sharjah Police statistics.

Last year, in comparison, 27,238 fines were recorded during the same period.

Major Abdul Rahman Khatr, Director of the Traffic Awareness Branch at Sharjah Police, said: “Wearing the seat belt is important as it reduces injuries in case of accidents. The fine for not wearing a seat belt is Dh400 and four black points under the new traffic law,” Major Khatr said.

The new traffic law came into force on July 1.

He urged drivers to fasten their seat belts and ask all passengers to do so and to strap up children under 10 in the back seat.

“I urge mothers to not carry their children in their lap in the car’s front seat even if they are using seat belts.” In case of an accident or sudden braking, children could be thrown against the windshield.

Major Khatr attributed the decrease in violations to awareness campaigns launched by the police.
