Sharjah: There was a six per cent drop in serious traffic accidents in the first half of 2015, compared with the same period in 2014.

Sharjah Police said that the traffic department succeeded in bringing down the number of accidents — causing injuries or deaths through awareness and traffic strategies to 359 in 2015 compared with 382 in the same period in 2014.

Statistics showed that Asians are the most common victims of serious accidents with 141 accidents, followed by Emiratis with 118 accidents, followed by Arabs with 82 accidents, GCC nationals with nine accidents and other nationalities with varying percentages.

The Sharjah Traffic Department added that the most common cause of accidents is not abiding by lane discipline, speeding, not leaving a safe distance between vehicles, tyre bursts, driving recklessly and running red lights.
