Locally-devised radar was activated on August 21 on Sharjah’s roads and is expected to decongest peak traffic by 30%
Sharjah: As many as 347 traffic offences have been recorded in one week by Sharjah Police’s new locally devised radar on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road.
The offences included hard-shoulder violations, vehicles not adhering to their lanes, obstruction of traffic and speeding.
The new radar, designed by the General Headquarters of Sharjah Police in collaboration with the Departments of Traffic and Patrols and Electronic Services and Telecommunications, was activated on August 21 and monitors roads with accuracy and clarity.
Captain Jamal Bu Afra, director of Road Monitor Branch at the Traffic and Patrol Department, said the new device is equipped with a high-resolution camera and advanced photo and video systems.
In the first stage, a total of 10 radars were installed along roadways in the emirate — on Al Ittihad Road, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road and Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road. The number will be increased over time, said Sharjah Police.
The new radar system is part of the Ministry of Interior’s strategy to ensure safety and security of road users and aimed to decongest traffic flow during peak hours by 30 per cent, according to a study carried out by Sharjah Police, Captain Bu Afra added.
