Dubai: Public transport proved to be a lifeline for more than 1.8 million people on New Year’s Eve as millions thronged various destinations in the city to enjoy the midnight revelleries of the New Year.

Dubai Metro operated non-stop from the morning of December 31, taking 837,034 people to different destinations, including Downtown Dubai, which was the epicentre of the UAE’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) tweeted on Monday that 1,865,583 people used different modes of public transport on New Year’s Eve.

Apart from the metro, 545,859 people used taxis, 390,061 used buses, 59,311 used marine transport and 33,318 people boarded the trams on Sunday.
