Abu Dhabi: Motorists in Abu Dhabi can now fill up their vehicles using smartcards as Adnoc Distribution on Tuesday rolled out the first phase of self-refuelling petrol stations in the emirate.

Set to run until October 1, the pilot phase covers four service stations in Al Mushrif area, Shaikh Zayed the First Street, near Khalifa University and Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, Adnoc Distribution said on Tuesday.

“The new stations allow people to refuel vehicles in a fast and easy way. There are many options for people to use the service through smart tag, Adnoc plus cards, through Emirates ID or by paying cash at the service stations,” said Abdullah Salem Al Daheri, CEO of Adnoc Distribution, adding that they will monitor the pilot phase and decide about expanding the service to other stations in the emirate.

People can also use credit cards and debit cards to use the service.

“In accordance with the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030 guidelines, Adnoc Distribution is committed to supporting the UAE leadership in achieving smart government and smart cities through implementing the service,” he said.

When asked whether people will be willing to use the service, Al Daheri said they are trying to change the mindset and behaviour of people using the latest technology.

“We are encouraging people to start visiting the new petrol stations and experience it themselves. It is easier, faster and safe,” he added.

A number of top officials including the new chief executive efficer of Adnoc, Dr Sultan Ahmad Al Jaber, and UAE Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazroui were present at the inauguration of the UAE’s first self-refuelling service station on Rabdan Street in Al Mushrif area.

Al Jaber said Adnoc will meet the growing demand of customers for refined petroleum products and other services according to a strategic plan that will expand infrastructure to keep up with the fast pace of urban development in Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
