Abu Dhabi: The UAE’s religious freedom and tolerance have been lauded by a Christian community leader, who says the country can be proud of its achievements as it celebrates its 44th National Day.

Ever since the country’s founding, the UAE has prided itself on its openness and multi-religious society, and has enshrined this concept within its own constitution. Article 32 says: “Freedom to exercise religious worship is guaranteed in accordance with established customs and provided it does not conflict with public policy or violate public morals.”

Reverend Andrew Thompson, MBE, Senior Pastor at St. Andrews Church, Abu Dhabi, a long-time resident in the capital, has been able to witness this tolerance first-hand.

“Recently I had the privilege to speak of the religious freedom of the UAE in the Houses of Parliament [in the United Kingdom] and I felt pride in being a messenger of good news from the Middle East,” he told Gulf News.

“The politicians for their part were encouraged by the example of the UAE in her commitment to hosting and permitting the different religious communities to worship openly without fear of persecution or reprisals,” he added.

Rev Thompson was especially grateful for the strong support the Christian community has received from the country’s leadership.

“I had the pleasure of attending a banquet hosted by a leading shaikh whose words and actions towards members of the Christian community embodied the ethos of the UAE,” he said.

“We desperately need more leaders across the faith communities to send a clear message that our shared values and experience are rooted in our humanity,” the reverend added.

And in a region riddled with troubles, Rev Thompson said the UAE stands as a positive example of success.

“The UAE can take pride in leading the way in the world in modelling an authentic Islamic model of hospitality and tolerance,” he said.

To continue fostering a spirit of friendship and unity, Rev Thompson encouraged members of the Christian community to take part in marking National Day.

“Wear the colours of the UAE flag and celebrate with the Emirati people, and thank God for the shared peace and stability that we enjoy in this country.”
