Dubai: Residents of Discovery Gardens are mystified as to why more than a dozen public swimming pools are not in use despite being completed months ago.

While developer Nakheel has been promoting the community as having 13 swimming pools, residents say there is no water in the pools yet.

XPRESS came across at least five pools in the Mediterranean, Mogul, Contemporary and Zen clusters where the gates were shut, with signs stating that construction is still taking place.

A Mediterranean cluster resident, who wanted to be identified as Patrick, said he had seen the pools, changing rooms and landscaping being completed about a year ago.

"Then about four months ago they were filled with water, but we couldn't use them. Since then I don't know what happened to the water, but the pools are empty now. It's a real shame because they look beautiful but we can't use them," he said.

Briton John Robins, who has lived here for two years, said he was fed up with the repeated "broken promises" regarding facilities by Nakheel when he bought his flat in the Mediterranean cluster.

"We were promised these fantastic swimming pools and that was two years ago. The pools look done to me, but they are gated up and locked so no one can use them," he said.

"We just don't understand the reason for it. They still have signs up saying they [pools] are under construction and I personally haven't seen anyone working on the pools to get them completed," he added.

A Nakheel spokesperson said: "We are working as a matter of priority to progress the handover of the pools. We can confirm that we are in the final stages of development and these facilities will be open to residents in the coming months."

He added that the pools were surrounded by pre-cast walls, barriers and warning signs to prevent entry till the pools are handed over.

No comment was available from Al Naboodah, who were involved in the pool project.
