Abu Dhabi: A number of food and drinks are prohibited from being distributed or sold inside Abu Dhabi’s school premises, including those containing preservatives, full-fat dairy products, food colouring or chemically altered items.

Condiments that typically contain a high amount of saturated fats should be replaced with products that are lower in fat content such as low-fat milk, yoghurt, cheese and mayonnaise, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) said.

“Regulations for school canteens have been set up by Adec and these outlets must be up to par with the Council’s guideline standards and policies. All schools in the capital have canteens but they differ between older and newer schools. The menu or canteen food list is approved by Adec, the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), the Health Authority-Abu Dhabi [HAAD] and the Quality Control Council [QCC],” Adec told Gulf News.

Additionally, ADFCA carried out inspections across bakeries that supply food to schools across the capital before the 2015-2016 academic year began on August 30.

Inspectors told Gulf News that most violations involved the cleanliness of the premises and methods of storing and maintaining food items.
