Sharjah: The UAE is a leader in regional and global humanitarian work and proactively launches charitable initiatives, said Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

Shaikha Jawaher is the founder and Royal Patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients Society.

In an interview with Emirates News Agency (WAM), Shaikha Jawaher, who is also International Ambassador of the World Cancer Declaration for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and International Ambassador for Childhood Cancer for UICC, said that the Pink Caravan is one of many such initiatives launched by the UAE, in line with its keenness to ensure the well-being and happiness of its citizens and residents.

“I am deeply pained by the suffering of cancer patients in general. A cancer patient suffers a lot from both the illness and treatment. They suffer physically, mentally and financially, and that suffering spreads from the patients to his family and community, and even the country itself. I always thought that prevention is better than cure, and by prevention I don’t mean the illness itself, but also preventing it from reaching advanced stages in which treatment and recovery become even more difficult. Pink Caravan aims to raise awareness about breast cancer and providing information on methods of prevention. The campaign also offers early detection screenings. The UAE is also striving towards setting up the first UAE Cancer Register and operating a mobile mammography unit that is equipped with advanced technologies for early detection of cancer,” said Shaikha Jawaher.
