Abu Dhabi: Ninteen Emiratis will graduate with Masters in Public Health (MPH) from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg University of Public Health on Friday - one of the most prestigious degrees in public health worldwide.

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the oldest and largest public health training facility in the world, was founded in 1916, with a mission to protect a population from illness and injury through pioneering new research, deploying its knowledge and expertise in the field, and educating scientists and practitioners in the global defense of human life.

The graduates, who were granted scholarships by the Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) in 2008, completed the MPH course-work in the areas of biostatistics, environmental health, management sciences, policy/problem solving, public health biology, and social and behavioral sciences.

The MPH programme helps prepare students to become leading public health professionals capable of addressing current global public health problems through multidisciplinary approaches that apply the latest scientific knowledge.

The enrollment of Emirati's in this programme is aligned with HAAD's strategic commitment to nationalization of the health care sector, grafting industry leaders of the future.

The Abu Dhabi Emirate, according to recent HAAD reports, has so far seen a 17 per cent increase in the overall number of doctors, with an 88 per cent increase in cancer doctors, 58 per cent increase in Psychiatry and 13 per cent in Pediatrics. Together, these doctors have seen 17 per cent more patients in 2010.

"The graduation of 19 UAE Nationals is part of the ongoing support to the health sector in general and commitment to the development of stronger national workforce. The UAE continues to provide opportunity to all UAE Nationals to fully contribute and actively participate in achieving the country's vision, goals and objectives. The special attention to the scientific side of health contributes to the strengthening of professional expertise, and achieving a better level of health care services to citizens and residents in the Emirate," he said.
