Dubai. In an effort to promote good health during Ramadan with a focus on regular medical check-ups, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is organising free medical tests at Dubai Mall until Saturday, August 4.

The move is in line with the ministry’s initiative ‘We Care’, which was launched during Ramadan to remind people that they shouldn’t ignore their health. The three-day awareness drive includes check-ups for diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity.

Dr Mustafa Nisar Khan, emergency medicine physician, Saudi German Hospital, Dubai, said residents have a misconception that fasting for more than 14 hours compensates for a high-calorie diet.

“In Ramadan, people tend to forget dietary control. Due to post-iftar socialising, people tend to eat, smoke and drink a lot more than they would, some extending this feasting phase towards suhoor. This unhealthy lifestyle can affect adversely,” he told Gulf News.

Of the importance of regular medical screening, he said one should get a medical test once every six months.

“Routine tests are an effective approach to finding out incidental cases like diabetes and hypertension. In fact, more than 30 residents aged 35-45 who have taken the free medical check-ups so far were shocked to learn about their high blood pressure and /or blood sugar. Early diagnosis is the best route for effective treatment and management.”

Obesity is a growing concern and to highlight this issue, VLCC International is providing a free body composition analysis with an obesity diagnosis that measures BMI (Body Mass Index), PBF (Per cent Body Fat); muscle mass and body fat mass.

Prafull Dwivedi, business head, VLCC, said: “As a preventive health care company, we understand the risks of obesity given the high levels in the UAE, and focus on weight loss and weight management. Through a body composition analysis, a person could take the necessary measures towards either prevention or control.”

A couple of residents also spoke to Gulf News about their attitude towards health. Salem Mohammad, an Emirati businessman in Fujairah, who used to be overweight said, “I learnt I had high cholesterol, and decided to switch to a healthy lifestyle. I now exercise every day — walking, jogging and swimming. I also avoid high-fat food. I have lost 10 kilos in the past three months.”

Sabrina Mesquita, an Indian marketing professional in Dubai, said she is struggling with her weight. “I used to be skinny, and I am trying to get back to my old form. I believe that one should do everything in moderation as long as exercise and diet are in place.”
