Dubai: More than 1,000 walkers are expected to hit the streets of Dubai for the first DXB 24-Hour Walkathon, a 24-hour walking challenge, on November 17.

The 90km walkathon around the streets of Dubai is designed to raise awareness of health and fitness and well-being in line with World Diabetes Day on November 14.

Starting at Zabeel Park, participants will get to test their fitness, endurance and strength for 24 hours on a dedicated route past some of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks.

“Dubai is the perfect hub for a multitude of sporting events and the growth in the industry in this part of the world has been phenomenal. We are always looking at ways to create awareness for a healthy lifestyle and well-being and we are delighted to support the DXB 24 Hour Walkathon,” Hessa Al Kous, Sports Events director from the Dubai Sports Council, said.

Those interested in taking part in the 24-hour walkathon may do so in teams of 20.

“Five people in the team will be walking at any one point and how they decide to split up the route is up to them. Only five people can be on the track from the entire team at any one time,” the organiser told Gulf News.

Police escorts, marshals and ambulances will be on site to ensure the safety of everyone. Food and water stands will be available throughout the route and will conclude the next morning at the annual Beat Diabetes Walk in Zabeel Park which will see thousands of participants pledge their support for diabetes awareness.
