UAE releases State of Sustainability Report

The UAE has released its first State of Sustainability Report -2016 which will work toward achieving a series of life-improvement goals approved by 193 countries under the United Nations.

The new report was released by Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence on Wednesday at the World Government Summit and strive to meet 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ranging from eradicating poverty and improving education to providing clean water for all.

Waleed Salman, Chairman of Dubai Carbon, said the report is "an important milestone" for the UAE and will complement similar efforts already under way in the UAE for the last few years.

'Stop deforestation and eliminate use of coal' 

Governments need to stop deforestation as well as eliminate the use of coal and restore degraded lands, said Felipe Calderon former President of Mexico and Chair of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate at the session titled Climate change: Overcoming the greatest challenge of mankind.

On the third and final day of the World Government Summit on Wednesday, Felipe Calderon urged delegates to push for new economy measures.

Ahmad Bin Byat, Chairman of Emirates Integrated, telecommunications company du, said: “13 billion devices are connected right now and in four years we'll have 38 billion."

According to Ahmad Bin Byat, the ‘Internet of All Things’ will improve the life of the people of Dubai.

Dr Al Arabi is the secrretary general of the Arab League. He was appointed Permanent Representative to the UN then a Judge at the International Cour tof Justice before being appointed Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs in March 2011.

Dr Al Zayani is the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council for the Arab (GCC) States of the Gulf. His career at the Bahraini defence forces spans three decades. He served as the chief of public security as a major general at the Interior MInistry in 2004.

Many parts of the world are becoming more fragile which makes quality leadership and governance more crucial, said Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank group.

Cloud computing new face of digital attacks

The new digital reality is that anything networked can be hacked. As everything is networked, it is vulnerable. Even if a computer is not connected to Bluetooth or the internet, viruses can infect it through ultrasound, said Rod Beckstrom, Cybersecurity expert, while delivering his presentation titled “Are we safe in a Digital World?”

Software attacks can cause fires in as everything depends on electricity. The solution is: independent grids.

Rod Beckstrom says he believes that cloud computing is the new face of digital attacks. Cyber risk management processes are increasingly common and every government should consider this model.

DAY 1

World Government Summit kicks off

Dubai: The fourth edition of the World Government Summit, themed ‘Shaping Future Governments’, kicked off on Monday. 

Held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the three-day summit is taking place at the Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai.

The event is being attended by more than 3,000 participants from 125 countries, including heads of states, top dignitaries, leaders and experts from the government and private sectors across the world.

Mohammed Al Gergawi, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs delivered the opening speech of the summit.

Al Gergawi addressed the future government services and changes in economy and business.

He spoke about how Shaikh Mohammad has made people’s happiness a KPI (Key Performance Indicator) for the UAE.

The summit will have US President Barack Obama deliver a keynote speech via closed-circuit television on the opening day. The US will participate as the annual guest of honour at this year’s event.

Shaikh Mohammad will also announce major structural changes in the federal government in preparation for the next phase of development in the UAE later on Monday.

Leading international organisations, including the United Nations, Gulf Cooperation Council, League of Arab States, World Bank, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and World Economic Forum are participating in the summit.


Over the next three days, the World Government Summit will discuss the future of eight vital sectors: education, healthcare, government action, science, innovation and technology, economy, labour market and human capital management, development and sustainability and the cities of the future.
