Gulf News asked: What do you expect from the next UK Government after the election?

“What I would like to see is a government that is fair to everyone and does not just pursue the policies of big business over the rights of man. Equally, I don’t want a government that promises what it can’t pay for.” — Jonathan Howell-Jones, UK expat

“I want the next government to enact policies to decrease inequality. The gap between rich and poor has widened over the last decade and changes such as increasing university fees has exacerbated this. I want to see tax changes that levy the top earners, ensure corporations pay their fair share, and use the proceeds to support the NHS and free education. I also want the government to pursue a softer Brexit that sees the UK remain part of the single market.” — Mark Watts, UK expat

“What I expect — to be honest — is more the same. I think [Prime Minister] Theresa May will win a majority that is not as big but will have enough for the carrying on with Brexit.” — Peter Branton, UK expat

“To be honest, I’m not expecting anything. I am hoping whoever comes in will have a bigger world view and looks after the next generation or we will have another brain drain to other countries.” — Dave Crane, UK expat

“For me, I expect the next government to negotiate a good deal for Brexit. I have been a supporter of Brexit for a long time and want a clear break from the EU. We also need to get a handle on the deficit.” — Anthony Denatale, UK expat

“What I expect is a much clearer approach to things that matter; defence budget, NHS, education and grammar schools, income tax, inheritance tax. Hopefully the next government will support the population better than the current one has.” — Natasha Baker, UK expat
