Dubai: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Wednesday ordered drafting a federal law on child protection to ensure a secure and stable future for children in the UAE.

The announcement came as Shaikh Mohammad visited Latifa Hospital to meet an Emirati girl who was allegedly tortured by her father. The seven-year-old girl, identified as Mira, was allegedly tortured by her father, a former government employee.

Mira’s father was arrested after his family accused him of torturing and killing Mira’s elder sister Wadeema. Shaikh Mohammad will bear the expenses for Mira's education.

Last week, Dubai Police recovered Wadeema’s body from the desert near Al Fayah village off Hatta-Oman road. The eight-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her father after he tortured her for months, the suspect’s family members said.

The parents and siblings of the suspect, identified as Hamad, 27, have said he must face the gallows.
Hamad, who lost his job due to an unspecified offence, is the third child in a brood of seven.

Prosecutors are waiting for lab reports to specify whether there were DNA traces found on the iron Hamad allegedly used to torture Mira and Wadeema.

“The Family and Juveniles Prosecution referred the iron that was confiscated from the father’s flat in International City to the biological lab, where it will be examined to decide whether there were DNA traces of the two daughters. The results will then be matched with what was mentioned in the forensic report to decide whether they are consistent,” a senior prosecution source told Gulf News on Wednesday.

Dubai’s Attorney General Essam Eisa Al Humaidan said that the investigation was expected to conclude on Wednesday and the suspect had been questioned.
