NEW YORK: Dr. Anwar bin Mohammad Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, stated that the United Arab Emirates supports an inclusive political solution to the Syrian crisis, which will meet the aspirations of the Syrian people and end foreign interference.
Gargash made his remarks during a meeting with Staffan de Mistura, UN Special Envoy, on Thursday, on the sidelines of the Ministerial Discussion on Syria that was held as part of activities of the 72nd Session of the United Nations, UN, General Assembly in New York.
Staffan de Mistura updated Dr. Gargash on the latest situation in Syria, and his efforts to narrow the differences among the Syrian parties.
Dr. Gargash affirmed the UAE's full support for the efforts of de Mistura in advancing the political process, to end the conflict and terrorism that destroyed Syria and destabilised the entire region.
Dr. Gargash represented the UAE in the Ministerial Discussion on Syria, which brought ministers of foreign affairs of UN Security Council member states and the Friends of Syria, as well as foreign ministers of countries with an interest in Syria, along with de Mistura.
In a joint statement, the ministers agreed on certain points that will guide their united efforts.
They stressed that there is only a political solution to the Syria crisis while reiterating their support for de Mistura and the UN-led efforts in Geneva, as well as their strong and effective participation in the meaningful negotiations with credible representatives of the Syrian opposition.
''Recovery and reconstruction support for Syria hinges on a credible political process that will lead to a genuine political transition, which can be supported by the majority of the Syrian people,'' the statement said.
The progress achieved must also translate into rapid, unhindered and sustained humanitarian access throughout the country.
The ministers also reiterated their commitment to the territorial integrity of Syria.
