Sharjah: The trial phase of the Sharjah Census 2015 has started and will cover four main areas until Thursday.

The four-day pilot phase involves the census of buildings, homes and commercial properties in Al Majaz 2, Al Rahamaniya 5, Sharjah Industrial Area and Al Rolla.

The Sharjah Department of Statistics and Community Development (DSCD) on Monday started the trial phase of the Sharjah Census 2015, which will officially begin in October.

The Sharjah Census staff visited a selection of residents and establishments in the four areas where they collected preliminary information and data about the number of members in each family and how many families live in each housing unit. They also collected the name, telephone number and Emirates ID number of the people interviewed.

The families involved in the pilot phase will not be visited again during the official census.

During the first two days, the Sharjah Census team received a great response from residents in the designated areas where they provided them with all the information needed.

Shaikh Mohammad Bin Abdullah Al Thani, Chairman of the Higher Committee for Sharjah Census 2015 and Chairman of DSCD, said: “The implementation of this pilot phase comes in line with a predetermined strategic plan that was set to ensure the efficiency of the census technical plans with regard to its execution and performance. The pilot phase will help us identify the points of weakness in the census forms and the technical system, allowing us to tackle them and assure the quality of the official census in October.”

The trial will be followed by a session on September 6 to discuss the findings. An official report will be prepared between September 7 and 10, which will include the results and recommendations.

In February, His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, issued Emiri Decree No 7 of 2015 on conducting a general census of the population, infrastructure, housing and establishments in Sharjah. The census aims to provide accurate statistical data on economic, social and demographic sectors, among others, in the emirate of Sharjah.
