Dubai: Dr Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahad, the Minister of Environment and Water, Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qatami, the Minster of Education and other top officials of different government organisations and private companies will ride the Dubai Metro on Wednesday to mark Car Free Day 2013.

Eng. Mohammed Nouri, Director of Corporate Marketing and Relations Department, said the top officials will reach Al Rashidiya, Al Qusais, Al Etisalat, Mankhol, Noor Dubai Al Islami and Business Bay stations at 7.30am, when metro officials will give them free NOL cards.

"The officials of all participating organisations who are coming from different directions will reach the Union metro stations nearby Dubai Municipality main building at 8.10 am to gather in front of the station and then will march to the empty car parking area, headed by the Ministers along with Eng. Hussain Nassir Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality," said Nouri.

Car parks of participating organisations will be closed. Anyone parking in these areas will be fined.

An exhibition of eco-friendly initiatives of the metro will be carried out by the Transportation Department in the car park.

Dubai Municipality launched Car Free Day in 2010, when 1,000 vehicles participated deducting three tons of carbon emission. Last year, Department of Land and Property, Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Etisalat joined the initiative, increasing the number of vehicles taking part to 2,400 and deducting the carbon emission by 4.2 tons.

This year, the civic body hopes to double the results in terms of the number of participants and conservation of environment, said Nouri.
