Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, yesterday (Monday) opened the second phase of the Sharjah Centre for Astronomy and Space Sciences at University City in Sharjah.

Following the opening ceremony, Dr Shaikh Sultan toured the centre and was briefed by officials on the new sophisticated facilities and technologies that have been added to the centre as part of its second phase.

At the centre’s visitor entrance, Dr Shaikh Sultan viewed a giant model of Apollo 11, which was the first manned mission to land on the Moon in 1969. He toured the Universe Exhibition, which articulates the scientific and geometric wonders of the Quran. The exhibition features a giant mural and screen and another eight screens narrating the story of the creation of the universe.

Phase 2 of the centre includes space interactive exhibitions that aim to expand people’s knowledge of physics and space and help them learn more about the challenges facing astronauts during their journey into space.

The opening was also attended by a number of shaikhs, heads of departments and specialist bodies.

The University of Sharjah has begun its preparations of this latest stage in cooperation with the centre’s management following the opening of its first phase, which was opened in May 2015.
