Sharjah: The Sharjah Department of Public Works has implemented more than 50 urban and infrastructure projects in the emirate at a total cost of Dh250 million in the first quarter of 2017, it was announced on Sunday.

The implementation of the projects comes in line with the Sharjah compressive development plan according to the needs of population expansion and urbanisation and to achieve Sharjah’s vision of sustainable urban development.

Ali Bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, Head of the Department of Public Works and member of the Executive Council of Sharjah, said “Over the course of the first quarter of 2017, the department implemented more than 50 vital academic, educational, marine, environmental, entertainment, aesthetic and infrastructure projects across the emirate of Sharjah with an aim to achieve the new strategic plan goals.

The projects included 11 public parks, which were implemented in various areas of Sharjah at total cost of Dh20 million and two consumer markets at a cost of Dh15 million, one in Al Hamriya city and the other “Al Juman Market” near Al Dhaid city. The department also completed the construction works in six typical nurseries costing Dh70 million.

The projects also involved a Dh25 million terraces and stadiums, new government buildings at a cost of Dh21 million, media, tourism and technical facilities (Dh40 million) and a rainwater harvesting station in Khor Fakkan and fisherman houses in Al Mamzar costing Dh20 million as well as Dh5 million maintenance and addition works for citizens.

As part of the projects, the department organised more than 20 social events, workshops, monthly programmes, issued manuals and launched a series of initiatives.
