SHARJAH: Top executives of Sharjah have affirmed that Unesco’s selection of the emirate for the title of ‘World Book Capital for 2019’ is a great and worthy honour for the book-loving city.

Khowla Abdul Rahman Al Mulla, chairperson of the Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC), said the unique vision and cultural approach adopted by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, have led to Sharjah winning the World Book Capital title.

She pointed out that Sharjah is distinguished by its strategic vision as a sponsor of knowledge and a unique role model for its people in promoting the culture of reading throughout the year. She commended the efforts made in this regard by Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.

She added that the world recognition crowns the efforts made by the Sharjah Ruler to nurture generations capable of giving, innovating, and contributing to promoting their societies at a global level.

Salah Saleem Al Mahmoud, director-general of the Sharjah Authority for Documentation and Archives, expressed pride over the achievement which he attributed to the great strides made by the emirate over the past years and the tangible steps taken by the Government of Sharjah to stand out in areas of culture and literature.

Rashad Salim, director of Al Qasimia University, said the global acknowledgement comes in fruition of the Sharjah Ruler’s tireless efforts to foster a culture of reading in the community.
