Dubai: Getting a personalised public transport card -- known as "Nol" card -- just got easier here.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has come out with a new service that makes it quicker and easier to get personalised Nol cards for travel on the Dubai Metro and other modes of public transport.

The RTA announced on Friday that it is rolling out a new initiative branded ‘Nol Express’ through which personalised Nol cards will be issued to residents in place of their existing standard and gold class cards at no additional cost simply by using their Emirates ID cards to confirm personal details.

The new Nol Express card will be issued within minutes of applying for it, doing away with the hassles of manually applying for it and filling out an application at any Metro station, and then waiting for 15 days to obtain it.

“This initiative conforms to the drive of the Dubai Government to bring happiness to people and make Dubai the Smartest City in the World. It also echoes RTA’s standing commitment to deliver an array of smart and excellent services to public transport riders, and its strong commitment to play a leading role in delivering services to people comprising all community segments,” Khalid Abdul Rahman Al Awadi, Director of Automated Fare Collection, Corporate Technical Support Services Sector of RTA, said in a statement.

“We have carried this initiative in collaboration with the Emirates Identity Authority aiming to streamline procedures of converting the Emirates ID card into a smart e-application through using the particulars of the customer entered in the Emirates ID card as a source of information needed for issuing the NOL card. The initiative has also been made possible thanks to the partnership with Enoc Company where it has been agreed to deliver the service all over its Zoom outlets at the Metro stations.”

Smart systems will be used to deliver the service to customers within minutes.

Customers must simply present their Emirates ID cards to service providers, who in turn would use the customers’ ID card details and image to order a personalised Nol card bearing the image of the applicant, and accordingly the personalised Nol card would be instantly issued to the client,” Al Awadi added.

The service is considered the first of its kind worldwide given that public transport cards would be issued directly to applicants with Emirates ID cards.

During the first stage, the service is being launched through Zoom outlets at Burjuman and Al Fahidi Metro stations.

Eight more outlets will offer the service by the end of November at Metro stations in Al Rashidiya, Salah Al Deen, Deira City Centre, Al Qiyadah, Emirates Exchange, Mall of the Emirates, Union Square and Baniyas.

The RTA is also considering adding external locations to offer the service in the future.
