Ajman: Speed limits have been reduced on a number of roads in Ajman found to be hotspots for accidents, the emirate’s police announced on Wednesday.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Traffic Safety Committee, which was chaired by Brigadier Shaikh Sultan Bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of Ajman Police.

The committee discussed ways to reduce accidents on roads that have witnessed mishaps most frequently. Effective from May 1, speed limits on a number of roads in Ajman will be amended.

Shaikh Omar Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi Street and Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Road will have their speed limits reduced from 80km/h to 70km/h, with speed radars catching motorists who exceed 90km/h.

Shaikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi Street, Shaikh Rashid Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi Street, and Kuwait Street will have speed limits reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h, with speed radars catching motorists who exceed 70km/h.

The speed limit on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Road will be reduced to 80km/h from 100km/h. Speed radars will catch motorists exceeding 100km/h.

Additionally, bumps and street cones will be placed on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road, specifically at exits leading out from the Adnoc and Enoc petrol stations.

Colonel Ali Humaid Al Museibi, Director of Traffic and Patrols at Ajman Police, said these amendments have been made to reduce accident rates on these roads. “Protecting lives is our priority,” he said. “After reviewing the statistics, it became clear that we have to take certain measures to reduce the accident rates on these roads. By reducing the speed limits and adding speed bumps along petrol station exits, we hope the motorists will be encouraged to reduce their speed and be mindful of other drivers.”
