Dubai: To support Emirates Red Crescent’s initiative of digging wells in impoverished countries, the Ministry of Labour has donated more than Dh86,000.

The ‘digging wells to honour the martyrs’ project is scheduled to “start soon”, a ministry official said, “and is estimated to be completed within seven months”.

The project was officially launched in September by the ministry and Emirates Red Crescent. “The project aims to dig a number of wells in poor, Islamic countries in Africa,” the official said, “it is being carried out to honour those who were martyred in Yemen, as a way of recognising the sacrifices they made to restore peace.”

Through the initiative, thousands of villagers in Africa will have access to potable water.

“The ministry values such initiatives, especially as they honour the sacrifices made by our martyrs,” Mubarak Saeed Al Daheri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour, said as he handed the donation to Emirates Red Crescent authorities.

“The initiative does not match the amount of sacrifices made by our martyrs who risked their lives in the call of duty,” Al Daheri said. “May their souls rest in peace and we pray for patience for their families. May god protect the UAE and its people and the region from all harm.”

Mohammad Al Zarouni, director of Emirates Red Crescent in Dubai, thanked the ministry for the generous contribution, which confirms the ministry’s keenness to embody the societal responsibility initiative.
