Dubai: A new Museum of the Future will be created to foster UAE ideas and innovation strategies to meet the needs of a new generation living in smart cities, according to a newly announced Law No 19 for 2015 issued by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, is appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Museum of the Future, Shaikh Mohammad announced in Decree No 27.

As part of the multi-pronged announcement on Saturday, Shaikh Mohammad also issued a new “Innovation Dirham fee” under Law No 20 of 2015.

A number of government agencies will receive the Innovation Dirham fee worth Dh10 in addition to the knowledge dirham.

Funds raised from the innovation fee will be allocated to support projects decided upon by the chairman of the board of trustees of the Museum of the Future.

The museum law will set up a research moratorium meant to oversee the museum called Dubai Future Museum Establishment that will enjoy a legal personality, financial autonomy, administrative and legal capacity needed for it to operate.

The objectives of the establishment in accordance with the law include enhancing the country’s status to adopt ideas and initiatives, innovative inventions, contribute to building a knowledge-based economy, forward thinking and creating a platform that resembles an incubator for ideas and innovation that supports the development of a stimulating environment for innovation and constitutes a source of inspiration for innovators and inventors and pioneers from around the world.

In addition, the objectives also include long-term development solutions for the challenges facing future cities and promoting community awareness of the importance of innovation to stimulate inventions and innovations at local, regional and international levels.

The establishment will also be responsible for the construction of the museum building and associated facilities, operated and promoted locally and regionally and internationally and the creation of research centres focused on science and the future that attracts researchers, inventors and research centres and leading scientific institutions and major companies in the world.

The establishment also manages the design and presentation of inventions and designs, unique and innovative exhibitions, conferences, training courses and workshops, counselling, encouragement and issuing research, studies and publications and specialised periodicals and invests in future inventions for goods and services and promotes them.

The functions of the museum will include the establishment of research centres to explore the next generation of science and technology and building the capacity of researchers and innovators from around the world in cooperation with the best educational institutions and specialised research centres in the world and also the launch of awards and incentive programmes for future inventions and innovations

The decree also appoints Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai museum.
