Abu Dhabi: Members of the Federal national Council on Tuesday demanded that laws be reformed to ensure systems of law and justice meet the challenges of modern society as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics evolve.

Members of the House argued the wave of automation, driven by artificial intelligence is creating a gap between current legislation and new laws necessary for the evolving robotics.

The House was discussing the Ministry of Justice’s policy for upgrading laws in view of the government’s strategies to adopt artificial intelligence, advanced science and digital revolution.

A report prepared by the House’s constitutional and legislative affairs committee found that laws were lagging behind intelligent systems of the fourth industrial revolution.

According to the report, robotics and increased automation of the fourth industrial revolution will bring about changes in society at every level and in every sector, which will necessitate reforming laws and upgrading the Ministry of Justice’s strategy to meet needs of modern society.

The Ministry of Justice launched a strategic plan for the fourth strategic session (2017-2021). The strategic plan aims to achieve Vision 2021, satisfy customers and employees, achieve justice and leadership, and provide creative legal and judicial services.

It also aims to develop leading legislation to guarantee the rule of law, the protection of rights and freedoms, in compliance with the UAE leadership’s directives and ambitions to be one of the world’s best countries.

The plan aims to adopt the best laws and legislation to cope with international trends and internal developments, comply with the nation’s traditions and achieve the needs and future aspirations of citizens, as well as to attract, train and encourage the best human resources in the judicial field, while working in a creative environment for implementing laws and legislation.

The strategic goals of the ministry include contributing to the drafting of laws that fulfil the community’s needs, complying with developments and foreseeing the future. They also include promoting a specialised justice system based on knowledge and organisational excellence that guarantees its independence and development, while establishing an advanced penal system that can help preserve the security of society, the protection of individual rights and public access to justice. It also aims to promote the ministry’s local and international partnerships and raise awareness of legal knowledge, while offering high quality, transparent and efficient administrative services.
