Abu Dhabi: Iran is fulfilling its nuclear deal obligations under the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), said the IAEA director general on the sidelines of the International Ministerial Conference on Monday.

Amano, who was in Iran on Sunday, met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and said that he had called on the Iranian president to ensure that Iran continues to abide by its agreements under JCPOA.

“I stated that JCPOA is a significant gauge for verification [of Iran’s nuclear programme]. The IAEA has been requested to monitor and to verify the nuclear related commitments made by Iran … and can state that they are being implemented,” he said.

“Regarding the activities by our inspectors, they are discharging their responsibility without problem … I can state that the nuclear related commitments by Iran are being implemented,” he added.

The nuclear deal has come under fire recently after US President Donald Trump refused to certify the deal in mid-October, with Trump threatening to pull out of the deal entirely unless new improvements are made to JCPOA.

Amano was asked to comment on the US position, but declined to comment, telling reporters that the IAEA’s task was related to technical matters, and not policy related issues.
