Abu Dhabi: The UAE’s commitment to protect labour rights falls within the country’s legislation and values, a top official said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 105th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva on Monday, Saqr Ghobash, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, said: “The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation applies the tools needed to achieve balance and stability in the employment relationship in order to preserve the rights of workers and the interests of the employers while keeping them informed of their legal rights.”

The session was also attended by Ambassador Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, and other international organisations in Geneva, in addition to delegations from over 180 member states.

“The ministry is keen on strengthening cooperation with its counterparts in the countries that are sending employers…in a bid to limit the negative practices that workers may be exposed to by the recruitment agencies in their home countries,” he added.

The UAE delegation also participated in a meeting with other GCC nations to discuss improvements that have been made in the GCC employment market towards protecting employee rights and dealing with related legal cases.

Other issues discussed include work etiquette and its role in maintaining the peace, safety and security of its environment and its assistance in facing disasters.

On Tuesday, the International Labour Organisation’s director-general will highlight the plight of the poor and methods to abolish poverty, among other topics.
