Abu Dhabi: Combating extremism is an urgent necessity as this global phenemenon afflicts all societies and carries catastrophic consequences, a senior official of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said on Sunday.
The traditional and limited confrontation with extremist ideologies in the realm of security efforts is no longer sufficient to confront the spread of these problems and their serious impacts, Major General Dr Ahmad Al Raisi, Inspector General of MoI, said while announcing details on the upcoming conference on security and extremism in Abu Dhabi.
Under the patronage of Lt General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the MoI will organise the Emirates International Conference for National Security and Resilience (2018) — ‘Tolerance, Moderation and Dialogue in the Face of Extremism’ on March 5 and 6 at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
“Extremism has become a global scourge that afflicts all societies and carries catastrophic consequences that do not stop at the level of destabilising the internal security of countries, but rather extend their effects on the national unity and regional and global stability,” Dr Al Raisi said.
He emphasised on developing comprehensive strategies based on strengthening and consolidating the values of tolerance, moderation and dialogue in the total process of dealing and confrontation of the menace.
“The UAE believes in the importance of promoting the values of moderation, dialogue and the rejection of hatred as a necessity, not only to address the extremist tendencies espoused by extremist groups and forces, but also to build a stable and cohesive society capable of achieving prosperity and progress for all members of society,” Dr Al Raisi said.
The conference will provide a platform for leaders, decision makers, politicians, academics, experts, governmental and non-governmental organisations to discuss concepts, challenges and strategies related to combating extremism.
The last decade has seen a significant increase in both the level of extremism and terrorism around the world.
“In today’s globalised world, the phenomena of violent extremism and terrorism have not only
become threats to the international peace, stability, and development, but also they become increasingly transnational, far-reaching and boundaryless,” the ministry said.
“In our world today, the consequences of violent extremism are reflected in spreading fear and triggering human unrest.
“No nation can be free of terrorism or part of its forms and manifestations. In all its forms and manifestations, extremism leads to the destruction of human communities, human values and human traditions, threatening the Global security and causing damage to global civilisation,” the ministry added.
