Abu Dhabi: The UAE Cabinet has approved a motion by the Federal National Council demanding that every citizen, married or single, male or female, gets a government house.

The proposal was submitted after the House debated policies of the Ministry of Public Works on building homes and federal roads during a session last year.

The new recommendations include cooperation between federal entities and housing authorities to ensure that every citizen receives a suitable home.

The Cabinet told the House that policies and systems will be set up to ensure every citizen gets a suitable home, regardless of whether the person is married or not and that the Ministry of Public Works will be the federal body to receive applications for homes.

The FNC demanded last year that housing allowances be increased for Emirati men who have more than one wife.

Members of the House suggested that husbands with multiple wives were suffering financially.

The salary scale has allocated 40 per cent housing allowance for single employees and 60 per cent for married ones. But the 60 per cent is fixed and does not increase if he remarries.

Members argued that the family burden on the employee increases if he becomes the financial provider of two families instead of one.
