Dubai: Enoc Group has launched a “critical incident investigation” in the fire that broke out at a petrol station in Al Twar on May 30.

Dubai Civil Defence said a car caught fire and the fire spread to the station. No one was injured and the fire was put out in ten minutes.

On Thursday, ENOC said a preliminary examination of CCTV footage from the station indicated the fire was most likely caused due to a fault in the car that was refuelling.

The company, meanwhile, advised motorists against driving vehicles with “near-empty” fuel tanks. “Do not wait until your vehicle fuel tank is nearly empty to refuel. You should keep 25 per cent of the tank full all the time during summer,” the advisory stated.

Saif Al Falasi, Enoc Group Chief Executive Officer told Gulf News: “We recommend keeping the tank at 25 per cent or slightly less as it reduces the build-up of hazardous vapour in the tank.”

These vapours that build up in fuel tanks are flammable.

ENOCs statement also highlighted some basic safety tips like not using mobile phones while in the petrol station, switching off the car engine, not smoking and also not to leaving children alone in the car while refuelling.

Referring to the May 30 incident, ENOC said a team of trained staff along with Dubai Civil Defence “spared no efforts in trying to douse the fire using DCP [dry chemical powder] extinguishers and were able to control the damage at the dispenser, car and canopy side.”

Safety measures, including high quality passive fire designs and auto shut-off and emergency response systems prevented the fire from spreading outside the refuelling area, it said, adding it will investigate the incident in close coordination with Dubai Civil Defence.
