Abu Dhabi: Applicants who submit an online form to renew their Emirates IDs could have their fines waived if they have a legitimate reason for delaying the renewal process.

Typically, those who fail to renew their Emirates IDs within 30 days after its expiry incur fines of Dh20 per day up to a maximum amount of Dh1,000.

The electronic form is available on the Emirates ID website. Residents must first create an account and complete 10 steps to fill out the renewal application. The last step involves paying for the new or renewed ID, and applicants can then select an option for the late fine waiver.

To be exempted from the fine, users must upload certain documents, or hand them over at an Emirates ID service centre. Once these are handed in, the applicant will be informed within 48 hours whether the fine has been waived, it was reported in Arabic daily,

When an applicant is granted a waiver, he or she can log on to the website again and make the regular payment for ID renewal. Alternatively, the fees can be paid at an authorised typing centre.

On the other hand, if the waiver is declined, the applicant will still have to pay the fine along with the renewal fee.

Reasons that qualify an applicant for a fine waiver are listed on the Emirates ID website, and include cases in which an applicant is out of the UAE for six months, or when there is a service error on the part of the Emirates ID or its authorised typing centres.

A further comment from the Emirates ID on why the waiver is granted was not available before print deadline.
