Dubai: Dubai Customs made 1,771 seizures during the first half of 2016 at Dubai International Airport and the passenger terminal at Maktoum International Airport.
The seized products included non-incendiary weapons, firearms, counterfeit and banned products, obscene content and items used in witchcraft.
In a statement to Emirates News Agency (WAM), Sultan Ahmad Bin Salim, executive director of Ports and Customs and Free Zone Authority, said that the seizures are a part of the efforts exerted by Dubai Customs to protect the society, economy and security of Dubai in particular and the UAE in general.
He pointed out that Dubai Customs works on achieving its strategic objectives by relying on qualified cadres, who are enrolled in training courses to enhance their capabilities.
Ahmad Mahboub Musabih, director-general of Dubai Customs, said that Dubai Customs was able to conduct so many seizures thanks to the fruitful cooperation with relevant government partners. Musabih pointed out that cooperating with various international organisations, as well as those located in the Gulf, also helped with many of the seizures.
He said that the Risk Engine, which was developed by Dubai Customs, made major contributions. Musabih said that the Risk Engine system is fed with information on cargo from many channels.
Ahmad Abdullah Bin Lahej, director of the Passengers Operations Department at Dubai Customs, said that Dubai Customs works diligently for the security of citizens and residents in Dubai and the UAE. He pointed out that such efforts are exerted using a comprehensive work system with different government and local private sector entities.
He said that Dubai Customs inspectors are highly capable and experienced in how to interact and deal with passengers from different cultural backgrounds.
