Dubai: Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Chairman of Dubai Municipality, has approved Dh1.3 billion for the implementation of the first phase of the rainwater and groundwater drainage project at Al Maktoum International and Expo 2020 site.

The 400-kilometre drainage project will also cover community compounds near Al Maktoum International and Expo 2020 site.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, director-general of the municipality, said the project reflects the Dubai government’s keenness to provide the city’s all needs of service projects that serve the emirate’s ambitious future vision and goals to maintain its position as a global destination in terms of the modern world city’s sophisticated infrastructure.

“The civic body has been carrying out its role to the fullest as service, and continues its work in keeping with the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. We are working to ensure that Dubai remains one of the smartest and most sustainable city in the world through the implementation of high-end service projects and latest systems in the world.”

Lootah said the project is implemented in two phases costing Dh2.5 billion in total.

He explained that the drainage project involves collecting and transporting of rain and groundwater through underground tunnels into the Gulf waters for disposal, as a 100-year solution to tackle the issue of rainwater drainage.
